MANIPULATING SPECTRAL ENTANGLEMENT BY COMPLEX TEMPORAL PHASE MODULATION

A research project within the HOMING Programme of the Foundation for Polish Science
Spectral engineering of entangled quantum light

THE PROJECT

Quantum entanglement manifests itself in the strongest possible correlations between two physical systems. Entanglement between photons forms the basis of ultimately secure cryptographic key distribution protocols – quantum key distribution (QKD). Furthermore, the field of quantum information processing (QIP), which holds promise to revolutionize computation and metrology, relies crucially on entanglement. Out of the photon’s degrees of freedom, the spectral-temporal is the most promising, yet the least explored in the context of QIP. Its assets are high dimensionality and compatibility with integrated optics, however manipulating spectral-temporal entanglement in a lowloss, low-noise manner is challenging. Here we will use the latest advances in fast electro-optic phase modulation techniques to perform significant modifications of the quantum state of spectrally entangled photon pairs. In particular, we will investigate their use for highly efficient spectrally encoded QKD.

PROJECT GOALS

Development of tools to enable efficient utilization of photon pairs entangled in the spectral-temporal degree of freedom for quantum information processing applications, such as high-dimensional quantum key distribution.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Construction of electro-optic devices enabling modification of spectral-temporal entanglement between pairs of individual photons. Training of young scientists towards their Master’s and PhD theses.

PRACTICALITIES

The project was carried out at the Quantum Photonics Lab at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw under the lead of Dr Michał Karpiński, in collaboration with the Optical Quantum Technologies group at the University of Oxford. The project was financed by the HOMING programme of the Foundation for Polish Science. The total value of the project was 753 270 PLN. It was fully funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund.

Find us

We are located at the Ochota Campus of the University of Warsaw, in the interferometrically stable basement of the Geophysics Building (room 021A).
We are a short tram ride from the centre of Warsaw. The Warsaw Chopin Airport is just a 20-minute bus ride away. On sunny days we escape the darkness of the lab to enjoy the adjacent Pole Mokotowskie Park.
